Residential Demand Response-Based Load-Shifting Scheme to Increase Hosting Capacity in Distribution System

Increasing the use of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation in order to decarbonize electric energy system results many challenges. Overvoltage is one most common problems distribution systems with high penetration PV. Utilizing demand-side resources such as residential demand response (RDR) have potential alleviate this problem. To increase PV hosting capacity, we propose an RDR based load-shifting scheme that utilizes interaction between operator (DSO) and resources. We first model a customer utility consists cost purchasing power, revenue from subsidy, discomfort due load shifting. When overvoltage problem expected, DSO issues local customers move their response. An optimization framework minimizes additional subsidy while keeping voltages prescribed range proposed. Because non-linearity power flow analysis, sub-optimal algorithm obtain prove performance gap optimal obtained by algorithm. A case study shows proposed increases capacity almost its theoretical limit at lower than curtailment method.
